Arne Jacobsen (b. Copenhagen 1902, d. s.p. 1971)

Very rare freestanding three seater “Novo” sofa with round mahogany legs. Sides, seat, and back upholstered with patinated natural leather. Designed and made approx. 1935. L. 224 cm.

Made approx. 1935 for the offices of the founders of Novo, the brothers Thorvald and Harald Petersen. The construction of the Novo Therapeutic Laboratory in 1935 was one of Arne Jacobsen's first purely commercial projects and also the start of a long-lasting cooperation between the company and Arne Jacobsen that would later result in more buildings and not least a design icon such as the “Ant” chair. The sofa was part of a group of overstuffed furniture for the executive offices and meeting chamber on the 2. floor of the building that also included an easy chair of similar form and upholstery. There are two known examples of the sofa, one example still resides with one of the descendants from the two founders of Novo.

Litterature: “Arkitekten”, 1935, pp. 215–220.
