One of the most celebrated private presses in the history of printing was founded by William Morris (1834–1896) in 1891. At age 56, Morris was internationally known for the furniture, stained glass, wallpaper, and textiles sold through his firm, Morris and Co; for his many literary works; and for founding the breakaway Socialist League.

Sire Degrevaunt was fmade by the Klemscott Press in 1896. There were 350 paper copies and 8 vellum. Wood engraved frontispiece by the English artist and designer Edward Burne-Jones who worked closely with William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelite movement on a wide range of decorative arts.
