Martinus Rørbye (b. Drammen 1803, d. Copenhagen 1848)

Purchased by Ribe Kunstmuseum in June 2017.

“Klostergang i Palermo med franciskanermunk”. A cloister in Palermo with a Franciscan monk. Signed and dated M. R. Palermo 1840. Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 50×38 cm.

Provenance: The artist's estate auction 1849 no. 47.

After their wedding in 1839 Martinus and Rosa Rørbye went on a long journey abroad. They did not return to Copenhagen until July 1841. In the winter of 1839–1840 they stayed in Rome, and during the summer 1840 they travelled to Naples, Capri and then to Palermo where this painting is from.
