King Stanislas II Augustus of Poland established the Order of St. Stanislas in 1765 in honor of his patron saint and the patron saint of Poland. As with other Polish orders, Russian Tsars began to award it to their Polish citizens after the Partition of Poland in the late eighteenth century. In 1831 it was fully incorporated into the Russian award system as the renamed Imperial and Royal Order of Saint Stanislas. Tsar Nicholas I of Russia revised the order’s Statute so that it included only three classes and allowing to be awarded for both military and civil achievement. As of 1844, it could be awarded to non-Christians and the Imperial state seal replaced the cypher of the Christian saint. It was frequently awarded to Muslim members of the Imperial Guards or important civil officials in the Caucasus and Russian Turkestan. On the order and its insignia, see Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm, The Russian Imperial Award System (Helsinki, 2005), pp. 137–138 and L.bvM. Grivova, ed., Polza. Chest. Slava.
