This volume of forty-four plates was published to accompany Giovanni Belzoni's, Narrative of the Operations and Recent Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs, and Excavations, in Egypt and Nubia…,(London: John Murray, 1821) . Giovanni Battista Belzoni was a leading explorer and draughtsman in Egypt. He worked for Henry Salt (1780–1828) as engineer and excavator and his achievements included clearing the Temple of Ramesses II (Abu Simbel), discovering six tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and opening the Pyramid of Chephren (Giza). Belzoni left Egypt in 1819; held an exhibition at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, 1821–22, and published various accounts of his discoveries. Egyptologist Howard Carter (1874–1939) regarded Belzoni's work as “one of the most fascinating books in the whole of Egyptian literature” and praised him as “one of the most remarkable men in the entire history of Archaeology.” The plates in this copy bear the imprint “1820” and are printed on paper watermarked J.Whatman.
