After his stay in Paris Jais Nielsen began working with ceramics in 1915. Later that same year he presented his first ceramic works at “Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling” (The Artists’ Fall Exhibition) in Copenhagen. In 1920 he began working at Royal Copenhagen, and this is where he truly connected with stoneware as a material. Through his work with the ceramic material he was often so keen on thoroughly exploring biblical and mythological figures that he reproduced them in several variations. It was therefore also for Royal Copenhagen that he made a monumental vase which carried the motif of Actaeon and Diana. According to Roman mythology, Diana was secretly watched by the human Actaeon while she bathed in the nude. Diana therefore punished him by transforming him into a deer, and subsequently Actaeon was torn into pieces by his own dogs, who did not recognize their master in his animal form.
