872/1528

Samuel Arnd (, St. Petersburg)

A Russian Royal Rococo revival lapis lazuli and 14k gold desk seal, set with flowers and rocailles, white agate seal engraved with crowned double monogram C for Prins Christian of Denmark, later Christian X. Samuel Arnd, St. Petersburg town mark, 56 standard. C. 1870. H. 8 cm.

Christian X presumable received this remarkable desk seal as a present at his baptasm October 31 1870 in Christiansborg Palace Church. The double monogram is without Roman numeral for Christian X (1870–1912-1947). This points to the fact that the desk seal was given and used in his time as Prince until 1906 at the death of this grandther, Christian IX, and as Crown Prince until 1912 at the death of his father, Frederik VIII. Prins Christian probably got the distinguished desk seal from his aunt, Tsaritsa Maria Feodorovna (1847–1928).

Exhibited: Christiansborg Palace, “Kejserinde Dagmar - Maria Feodorovna - Empress of Russia”, 1997 no. 244, reproduced and mentioned p. 500–501.

Provenance: His Excellency, Count Christian of Rosenborg (1942–2013), grandson of Christian X.
