Viktor IV (b. New York 1929, d. Amsterdam 1986)

Rundetårn, 1966. Signed and dated on the reverse. Painted driftwood. 62×73 cm.

Despite the fact that Viktor IV was born and raised in New York, Europe was calling him. It was Amsterdam that stole his heart - and later the Dane Ina, whom he met when he visited Copenhagen in the 1960s. In Amsterdam, Viktor found the freedom he was looking for as an artist. Here his quirky, eccentric, inventive and creative self could be himself. The Amstel river became his floating home and his source as well as inspiration for the use of artistic materials. Viktor made it his specialty to paint on driftwood. He called these works “Ikons”, and they became absolutely central to his work production. Inspired by the Greek icons, he depicted with his own irreligious imagery what fascinated him; whether it was the sun, the runic alphabet or the architecture around him - as in this work that shows us Rundetårn in Copenhagen. In the center you can see Rundetårn, and the numbers to the left indicate the number of levels that can be seen from the outside. On the reverse, he has even given it a Rundetårn stamp. After Viktor got together with Ina, he often came back to Copenhagen - which also resulted in several exhibitions in Denmark, including at Louisiana and Glyptoteket. Throughout his lifetime, he achieved great recognition for his work. His special and charming character became part of the city of Amsterdam, which also gave him a well-deserved farewell after Viktor tragically drowned in 1986 in the Amstel river.
